Doing the GOP's Job for Them

I tend to believe that John Kerry was trying to make a "joke" at Bush's expense. But even that most charitable interpretation still portrays him as a person of questionable character. Unfortunately, insults against the President's intelligence is what passes for humor and wit on the political left today, so that doesn't speak well for his entire movement.
Having said that, it's hard to interpret what he actually said any other way than the Republicans have. As others have noted, he'd have been far better off if he'd apologized and said he misspoke rather than turning it into a angry claim of Republican treachery in interpreting what he said the way he said it.
Think some Democrats are regretting having him as their 2004 nominee even more now?
